HERMES 2022 edition: What changes?

The HERMES method has been updated and expanded to reflect contemporary project management practices, and now fully integrates agile methods. HERMES 2022 thus offers a coherent framework enabling project managers to use classic, agile or hybrid methods flexibly, depending on the requirements of their projects.

The main changes

The main improvements to the HERMES method are as follows.

Phase model

Up to now, the method included 4 phases, namely Initialization, Design, Realization and Deployment. A new phase entitled "Closure" has been added, which enables the project to be closed, regardless of the solution creation method. During the initialization phase, it is determined whether the solution is to be created using an agile, classic or hybrid approach. In the case of an agile or hybrid approach, the "design", "realization" and "deployment" phases are combined in a single phase called "implementation". The "project lifecycle" is clearly structured as follows: project start, solution creation and project end.

Scenarios

Unlike the previous version of HERMES, there are now only 5 standard scenarios - the old agile scenarios having been abandoned, since agility is now integrated in the form of agile "implementation". The relevant scenario is chosen during the initialization phase, and its application is limited to the creation of the solution.

The standard scenarios are as follows:

  • Service/product development

  • Service/product adaptation

  • IT development

  • IT adaptation

  • Organization adaptation.

Method strength: These scenarios can be adapted to the needs of the organization in two ways:

  • Sizing: adapt the scenario, taking into account the level of documentation required, according to the size and value of the project.

  • Tailoring: create individual scenarios or adapt existing ones by removing or adding modules and/or results.

Roles

The role of the user representative has become very important, and he or she now bears functional responsibility for the solution ("product ownership"). His role also encompasses the responsibilities of the "business process manager" and the "application manager", which no longer exist in the method.

Other new features include greater emphasis on the Procurement process, the business model, prototyping, stakeholder representation, and greater clarity on when the project should begin and end (new milestones).

What's the impact on certification?

HERMES certification is available at two levels: HERMES Foundation and HERMES Advanced. Certification is organized by the certification body TÜV SÜD.

If you already hold a HERMES 5.1 certificate, it will remain valid until its expiry date. However, project sponsors may require HERMES 2022 certification. Please note that as a HERMES 5 certificate holder, you benefit from a reduced price for HERMES 2022 certification until 31.12.2023.

How to prepare?

Discover our unique "blended" training approach, combining flexible online courses with interactive face-to-face (or virtual) sessions.

With our program, as soon as you register, you have access to the online course, enabling you to learn at your own pace and acquire the basics even before the face-to-face (or virtual) training day. What's more, you can then return to the online course to deepen your knowledge and practice through our exam simulations, so you're ready to take your TÜV SÜD certification exam.

Our HERMES 2022 blended training courses are available in English, German and French:

You can also purchase HERMES 2022 eLearning training modules to study and prepare for exams at your own pace.

As projects continue to work with HERMES 5.1, our HERMES 5 training courses continue to be available on request.
